Pharmacological Classifications:
Gastrointestinal Drugs.
Mechanism of Action:
-Pharmacotherapeutic group: Antidiarrheal, Gastro intestinal protectant
Pharmacology:
Pharmacodynamics: Due to its leaflet structure and its high plastic viscosity, Diosmectite possesses a powerful coating property on the gastrointestinal mucosa. By interacting with glycoproteins of mucus, Diosmectite increases the resistance of the mucosal gel in response to aggressive agents.
By its action on the gastrointestinal mucous barrier and its high-binding capacity, Diosmectite protects the gastrointestinal mucosa.
Diosmectite is radiolucent, does not color the stools and, at usual doses, does not modify the physiological intestinal transit time.
Pharmacokinetics: According to structure of dioctahedral smectite (active ingredient), Diosmectite is neither absorbed nor metabolized.
Indications:
Treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea in adults and children.
Fluid and electrolyte depletion may occur in patients who have diarrhea.
The use of Diosmectite does not preclude the administration of appropriate fluid and electrolyte therapy, should this prove to be necessary.
The extent of rehydration and route of administration (orally or intravenously) must be adapted to the severity of the diarrhea, the age and clinical context of the patient.
Dosage:
Adults: 1 sachet in 100 ml of water 3 times per day.
Children more than 6 years: 2 – 3 sachets per day.
Children more than year: 1 – 2 sachets per day.
Each sachet shall be used only once after it is opened. Dissolve the content of each sachet in a glass of water.
Before using Diosmectite in children it is advisable to seek medical advice.

To obtain a smooth suspension, pour powder slowly into the water and mix well.
It is advisable to consume Diosmectite between meals.
In children, the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea must be accompanied by the early administration of an oral rehydration solution (ORS) to avoid dehydration.
