The US Independent Commission on Preventive Services has announced that people who are obese or overweight should have initial screening for type 2 diabetes.
The previous recommendation was changed, as the ages ranged between 40-70 years, to become for people aged between 35-70 years, who are obese or overweight.
In this recommendation, experts suggested that people with prediabetes should be referred to medical care to prevent type 2 diabetes.
This is because diabetes is the seventh cause of death, and leads to more serious health complications, such as heart disease and stroke.
Early screening reduces the number of people with type 2 diabetes, which will lead to better health outcomes and reduce the risk of complications, said Dr. Mary-Marie Voucles-Kellis, an endocrinologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
It is worth noting that prediabetes and diabetes are diagnosed using blood tests, such as fasting glucose, glucose tolerance test, and HbA1c.
The normal rates for these examinations include the following: Fasting glucose level: 100-125 mg/dL.
Glucose tolerance test: 140-199 mg/dL two hours after ingestion of 75g of glucose.
Cumulative sugar: 5.7-6.4%.
