MECHANISM OF ACTION AND PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES:

Terbinafine hydrochloride is a synthetic allylamine derivative with an anti-fungal activity.

Nailfen exerts its anti-fungal effect by inhibiting squalene epoxidase, a key enzyme in ergosterol biosynthesis in fungi. This action results in deficiency in ergosterol and a corresponding accumulation of squalene within the fungal cell and causes fungal cell death.

Nailfen is fungicidal against dermatophytes, moulds and certain dimorphic fungi, and either fungicidal or fungistatic against yeasts, depending on the species.
